Welcome to Zimbabwe!

The name Zimbabwe translates: "great house of stone" because since the 12 th century settlements of big stone houses have been around here.

Zimbabwe is about the same size as Germany, though only 12 million people are living here.

Our capital is called Harare and is at an altitude of 1400 m above sea level.

 

Some snippets about Zimbabwe's history:

10 000 b.c. the first farmers and hunters appeared, one can still admire their cave paintings here

1856 Dr. Livingston discovered the Victoria Falls

1857 Robert Moffat founded the first Mission Station

1888: Arrival of the first white Settlers

1895: Zimbabwe & Zambia were put together under the name of "Rhodesia“.

1966 started the war of Independence "Chimurenga“ and in

1980 independence is finally achieved after many bloody decades.

Today the once thriving economy is in considerable difficulties.

  • Unemployment is around 80%;

  • one in four people are infected with HIV.

  • 5000 die every week of Aids.

About the people of Zimbabwe:

There are 42 different ethnic groups are found in Zimbabwe. The biggest of it being the „Shona“, ( 70% ) then the “ Ndeble” ( 14%.) The official language is English, but the most commonly one is Shonah. More then half of the people adhere to African traditional Religion. Many here are very good with crafts: Shona – Stone sculptures are widely known. The national dish is called „Sadza“, a maize porridge, which is eaten with a tasty vegetable sauce and meat.
